The Moffitt Cancer Center - University of Florida Initiative
Sep 09 2008FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR COLLABORATIVE INITIATIVES
A vibrant NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center has numerous inter- and intra-programmatic interactions leading to joint publications and grants with multiple principal investigators (RO1s, PPGs, and SPOREs). The University of Florida and the Moffitt Cancer Center recently announced their intention to seek to develop a consortium style NCI Cancer Center with rich interactions in basic science, population science, clinical investigations and translational research.
To begin this process of close collaborations, and to reinforce ongoing collaborations, we seek investigators from the Moffitt and UF who will join forces in research projects. Such interactions can bring new and exciting directions and focus to an individual's or a group's research. Funds have been identified for project applications to develop new collaborative research between Moffitt and UF investigators.
Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis. A clear cancer focus is required and the potential for clinical relevance is highly desirable.
Projects Requirements:
- Proposals to be a maximum of two pages to describe the project
- At least two investigators (1 from Moffitt: 1 from UF)
- Budgets up to $100,000 for a maximum of 12 months; potentially renewable for a second year depending on scientific progress and the availability of funds
- Description and justification of budget and how funding is to be distributed (one page)
- Include potential use of Moffitt or UF cores
Applications are expected to result in documented examples of the new research collaboration such as joint publications and co-authored grant applications. Periodic progress reports will be required for research and publications/grant applications. The deadline for a final progress report will be 30 days before the anniversary date of the award.

Focus interest groups are being formed and events are being scheduled.
Investigators can begin developing research interactions. Applications must be submitted before the deadline of October 1, 2008 (for Basic Research) or October 15 (for Population Science and Clinical, Translational and Experimental Therapeutics) for review in October. Depending on the money available and the quality of applications, there may be subsequent opportunities.
